Cutting losses in Jamaica's water distribution networks by more than half

  • Projects

Prized by tourists for its paradisiacal beaches and tropical ambience, Jamaica is also a country undergoing rapid economic and demographic expansion. Its rapid growth is exposing it to major challenges in terms of resource management, particularly water.

At present, Jamaica's water networks suffer significant losses, estimated at almost 70%, representing considerable waste and increasing the risk of prolonged water shortages. To remedy this critical situation, the Jamaican government has decided to take drastic action by launching an ambitious project aimed at reducing water losses to 30% throughout the country.

To bring this major initiative to fruition, a contract was awarded to the FEI Consulting - RJ Burnside consortium, in partnership with Naldeo. Our group was tasked with carrying out the preliminary technical and financial studies, as well as identifying the actions to be implemented to achieve this ambitious objective. These actions include the use of innovative leak detection technologies, as well as the implementation of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract indexed to the delegate’s performance.

The international tender for this major project is scheduled for the first half of 2024, under the supervision of Jamaica's National Water Commission (NWC). This initiative marks a crucial step in the country's efforts to improve the management of its water resources and ensure a sustainable future for its residents and visitors.
